Watch D.O.G.S.

Purpose of Watch D.O.G.S. Program

Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. The program serves to bring communities closer together based on these values-based goals. Ultimately, the purpose is to provide support to educators and encouragement to children.

Program Benefits

Provide positive male role models who can impact a student's life by demonstrating:

  • Education is important
  • Positive self-esteem
  • Proper social behavior

Schools gain an extra set of eyes and ears to:

  • Deter bullying
  • Enhance a school's security
  • Help create an environment conducive to learning

Fathers gain greater awareness of students' challenges in today's world.

Who are Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students)?

They are fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other father figures who volunteer at least one day each year at an official Watch D.O.G.S school like Walnut Grove Elementary. Mothers are also welcome in the absence of an adult male figure in a child's life. Watch D.O.G.S. may read and work on flash cards with students, play at recess, eat lunch with students, watch the school entrances and hallways, assist with traffic flow, and any other assigned activities where they actively engage with not only their own students, but other students as well. Many school principals have reported that the mere presence of a Watch D.O.G.S. volunteer dramatically reduces reports of bullying. On the day of their participation, Watch D.O.G.S. volunteers are given a brief review of their involvement and they wear an official Watch D.O.G.S. T-shirt with disposable "Dog Tag" identifying them as Watch D.O.G.S.

If you have questions or would like to be a Watch D.O.G. for a day, please contact the school office at 913-780-7710.
